Struggling to get through this one. The wartime stuff is ok, but the modern day protagonist is horrific and self-absorbed. Her best friend (who was introduced as being awesome and caring) is now being painted as a shrill, vapid, superficial egotist, clearly setting her up so we don't feel bad when the 'heroine' nicks her boyfriend
