Kelly Slater is 16 years old now and has his drivers liscense. The conflict he is facing is now that he is older, his parents and friends are pressuring to drive them places and work harder and harder to get better at surfing. So, to get away from his problems, he takes a trip by himself to clear his mind.

Kelly is 13 years old, he is travelling around he world winning different pro surf contests even though he isn't pro yet. When he lands back in cocoa beach he surfs his first pro contest and gets first again, but the prize is a two week trip to the North Shore of Oahu. When Kelly lands, the first place he went to is pipeline. On his first wave he falls and cuts his back on the shallow reef so he stays away from pipe.

The book starts out talking about where Kelly lived in his younger years which is Cocoa beach. Cocoa beach also is a place where NASA would launch spacecraft and rockets to test them because cocoa beach is an isolated place. Also every day they would find rats in the closet and Kelly's mom or dad would shoot them with a pellet gun and young Kelly would be scared to go in there.
