This is painful to read. Painful because it could have as easily been any of "us." I read the English sentences his religious dad (or other characters) say throughout the book but I hear them in Arabic in my head. Too familiar. Too close to home. I could vividly picture the packed food his wife brought him, the walls, the pomegranate tree, the theatre students sitting under a palm tree. Too familiar. Too painful.
