Hahahah yes. It’s 400 pages of well-written misery. I gave it 4 stars, but Goodwill’d it; you couldn’t pay me to read Cookson again.

Ya..thinking this will be my last

I tried 2 others...one was a DNF & the other I finished, tho I wished I hadn’t. Both were equally laden with misery. 🙄 CC apparently had a thing for misery. Bleh.

The one I just finished wasn't to bad..but this one...wow totally depressing on her life and I read your review..a 'sorta HEA? so the whole book is this abusive and depressing till a few chapters at the end? I might sneak a peak..see if I want to go through all of this or move on..hmm

IIRC, the heroine ends up married to someone else who isn’t a farmer, so she leaves with him. I honestly don’t remember who it was, tho...either someone from the rich family or the preacher guy. The other kinder, younger brother/son & his new wife end up with the farm. BUT. This all happens in the last 10 pages.

Ive been sneaking..a guy name Luke beats the crap out of her? Not sure I want to go there..looks like Henry is who she leaves with? I dont know..if it gets any more "debbie downer" I might not be able to finish, nothing happy in this book!

It’s a long slog o’ gloom, for sure. I think Luke is the rapey brother of her crippled husband? Don’t remember for sure. 😶
