The author uses a simile to characterize how Jesse Owens (Character in the book) runs. For example, Jesse Owens had just finished competing in the Olympics of 1936. A news writer then uses a simile saying " Owens runs as easily as Bill Robinson tap dances."

In this book, the main character (Joe Louis) is an African-American boxer who is in a time where people of his skin color where often suppressed. During a boxing match involving Joe Louis, the people in the crowd at the fight would yell racial slurs at him Like the "Hard R" (page 48-49). This shows how people treated african-Americans were treated back then.
