I'm a bit put off by the different treatment of long, messy sentences depending on whether the author is a nobody or a Pulitzer prize winner. I mean, in both her examples the sentences seemed messy and overcomplicated to me, but oh the second one was written by a Pulitzer prize winner, so let's find some redeeming interpretation.
