I finally figured out the era this book takes place. Due to the reference to King Rhys of Wales, I think this happens somewhere in the 1150s.

Pre-read: since this is a MNLink book, I want to finish it as quickly as possible. I picked this up because it was the first book ever to be given the Newbery Honor medal in 1922.
