I used Pelikan's book on Mary for my dissertation, I believe! Ah, those were the days...

I loved both Jesus Through the Centuries: His Place in the History of Culture and Mary Through the Centuries: Her Place in the History of Culture. This series is amazing but makes for incredibly dense reading. I must say that I enjoyed the first two volumes most because I'm interested in early church history.
