A few days after James left, an incident had occurred with the Mistress. Late at night, John woke up Black Beauty in a hurry. Later on while Black Beauty was in her stall, he had heard the second hostler telling a man to put hay into a horses rack with a pipe. Beauty did not know what for, so he just left it alone. Then, he took a nap, and when he woke up, he could barely breathe and the air was very thick. Ginger and all the horses were also struggling to breathe. That was because they were all in a fire. The master new that James was the perfect person for the job, so it was settled. So, before the time had come, James needed to make sure that he got all the practice he could get. After that, the master and the mistress went to go visit friends.

Black Beauty and his master had to go on a business trip. However, there was a really bad storm, and everything was wet. When they were finally coming back, they had to cross a bridge but Black Beauty new that there was something wrong with it, so she didn't go. John and the master were both confused, but it had turned out that the bridge was actually broken. Then, they were both so happy that they had Black Beauty-

Black Beauty and Ginger loved racing. Ginger would always ride the master, and Black Beauty the mistress. Ginger knew that his mouth had been spoiled and that was why the mistress didn't want to ride him. However, Sir Oliver said that she had the greatest honor. They were all discussing how cruel people treated Sir Oliver and cut of his tail. People carelessly shaved puppies and horses or cut a piece of their skin. -

This chapter was mostly talking about Merrylegs. He was a very good and respectful horse. Whenever Mr. Blomefield's family came to visit, his kids would always want to ride on him. He would never be cruel to the kids but, when he had enough playing around, he teached the kids a lesson in a very nice way. Merrylegs said that he would never be disrespectful, because, he never knows where he would end up after.
