I really need to make a renewed effort with the Patnaiks, they really have breath-taking insights but require several layers of prior experience, famously: https://mronline.org/2011/06/26/revis.... What we really need is a popular introduction to their works...

"As in the earlier period, ensuring that the supply of energy and of goods is kept flowing at nonincreasing prices to meet the growing demand at the core is crucial for maintaining the value of money at the core, as well as to ensure the stability of wealthholding, which is a central concern of capitalism; but the conditions for doing so are more difficult to establish in the absence of direct political control."

"the Patnaiks unearth a gorgeous quote from Keynes which refers to Lenin: “Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the Capitalistic System was to debauch the currency... Lenin was certainly right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency.”"

This one's on my list too! I (irrationally) hesitated for a while as long as I was in Cockshott's orbit, as he has issues with the book (https://paulcockshott.wordpress.com/2...)... But then again, that's all of marxism.

For me, it was hearing David Harvey debate with Prabhat Patnaik and feeling that they were both just talking around each other :/ But as you say, this is nothing new to marxist critiques, esp. on the topic of imperialism (i.e. productionist vs. circulationist). And I am much more willing to consider the Patnaiks' views than I would with, say, Bill Warren (we still need to resolve this lol).
The end of the book has a section by Harvey and a reply by the Patnaiks.
