Custis 1920. Orphir Mountains. Jo leaves for Custis, her old childhood life and little Deborah hopes that Uncle Cy is there. Jo Caneday Willard, her father Asa Caneday, Sam, Willard, and Cy appear at the courthouse for the divorce. Cy is rum-running at $25.00 a trip and repairing cars for income.
Nyctophobia/nyctophilia- fear/ love of the dark

New words: scrofulous, ganglion., Cy leaves New York City. Everyone who knew him wondered why. Josephine sees her marriage disintegrating, with Sam's infidelities, insecurities, and uncaring attitude for her or their child. She leaves after being rejected by Sam, after a long soliloquy of self-debasement, believing that all their problems were her fault and that she would change and make it better for Sam.

Rotogravures-a new word. Mercy hospital is so different from what we know today. The medical unknowns are frightening for doctors and patients. Contaminated antiseptics, septicemia, delirium, nurses with depression, surgical patients afraid to go home, or who didn't survive the healing process. (new word-Gambolier) Cy assists-possible malignant cyst in young woman. Surgeon does a complete hysterectomy. Cy is upset.

I am not a fan of DeVoto's writing but I will continue on to see where the story goes. I think this may be a romance story, but not sure. This is the first book of his, I have come across. Cy Kinsman, singer Josephine, a childhood friend, and her daughter, Deborah are the main characters. Cy is in love with married Josephine (Sam, would-be writer). She is very ill and sad. City life does not agree with her.

Found in a Little Library in Salisbury, NC, in front of the Spectrum building. I dropped off 7 books I had read, mostly young adults. The setting is a hospital, Mercy Hospital, 1919. Cy Kinsman, a gifted surgeon, and Josephine, wife of a would-be writer, and mother, of a little girl, Deborah, are close friends, growing up together, are the main characters. Deborah's marriage is rocky and Cy is drawn to her.
