I find the author’s language embarrassingly pretentious and he’s too comfortable using words that insult the enslaved he writes about. For example, he calls enslaved children pickaninnies, and uses “niggers” every chance he gets. The narrator is not a contemporary of the time written about but speaks from a more current time so that isn’t necessary.
I’ll keep reading to see if it improves.
