Talks about shams and merchants of salvation. The desire to obtain true inner freedom (freed from egocentricity) is compelling. Yet his use of words like “evil” perturbs me. Suggests being more conscious of the “talk” we engage in, which got me thinking.

Interesting to ponder on Kierkegaard’s idea to “will one thing” and how it is connected to being fully awake. Fromm suggests that industrialisation actually inhibits excellence, since the path to excellence becomes pleasant through machine production. This notion of awareness is that linked to critical consciousness (uncovering awareness), and he points out similarity between Marx & Freud (uncovering conflicts)

Interesting idea of freedom based on whim vs freedom based on will. The best summary of ‘whim’ I’ve encountered - that it responds to the question “why not?” Instead of “why?” and that whim is based on passivity while will is based on activity.
