Kyle Muntz I just read this a while ago. It didn't gell until later on but when it did it was amazing.

Jamie Grefe I think I'll have a similar experience. Hope so. I can already feel it welling up, but I'm still keeping up the new characters Erickson introduces as we enter Darujhistan. It's been awhile since I've read fantasy--such a good feeling, though.

Kyle Muntz I liked the subtlety of Erikson's approach especially; he does things with scene construction in the second half of the book that felt amazingly refreshing. Plus it seems cool that it would begin where most other series would end.

Jamie Grefe I'm all into learning from those who are much better than I am and, yeah, even 182 pages in, those scenes are beautifully executed. The beginning was a struggle, not the language (which was beautiful), but the depth of being thrust into the world like that. I think you nailed it by saying he began where others would end. Gives the book such a rich context to go out from.

Kyle Muntz I've been thinking a lot about the difficulty of the book. It's fascinating because it's not textual (dealing with language) but contextual, which is a whole different game. Curious to see how your thoughts go later.
