Kinda feeling a bit of a "Memento" / "Cask of Amontillado" sort of vibe.

Very good job humanizing James and still showing the impact of his actions. You feel bad for Rebecca's loss and sympathetic for the crap James went through. Does it justify the bad? Nope, but it does add depth for them to contrast each other.
