(2/2) maybe.... research better next time....? idk if there's actually a gcms that you can run metal through (like... How tho??) but gcms needs a volatile sample (meaning it can evaporate, the easier the better. can metal be evaporated in normal lab setting?) because the sample will be vaporized inside the gcms. Like any evaporation, the sample in question will turn to gas. This gas will be carried through the chromatography column (that's why it's called GAS chromatography) and then to the mass spectrometry side of the instrument. Maybe if the author made the labtech say 'further analysis' instead of namedropping lab equipments that I knew the basics of, I could have stayed until the end of the book

I don't work with gcms often but i have a few friends that used them often and they used to bitch about the sample prep stage enough times that I have to at least know how it operates in principle - just enough to understand their rants
