Ember has tracked down the first assassin but her first attempt to terminate him failed. Earlier in the story a curve ball is thrown.

Ember is an assassin. Her latest contract goes pear shaped, a second assassin tries to complete the contract. He loses the argument and his life. Rules have been broken, so Ember is given a black spot. For the next 6 weeks she is the target, each of the six branches take it in turn to kill her. The first assassin has already had one attempt and failed.
