The book was written in the 70's, twenty years before wolves were brought back to Yellowstone. Before the wolves to blame, the ranchers demonized the coyote. In newspapers and on the radio, they were proclaiming that the coyote was responsible for killing livestock and decimating the big game herds, and thus, the coyotes must be eradicated. Some things don't change.
