I dunno, y’all, I’ve been at this a dozen years and read thousands of reviews and it feels like for 80% of people their opinions abt books- and honestly, a lot else- comes down to aesthetics & a vague half understood feeling. There are some brilliant reviewers out there and I love you so much!!! But I keep getting sucked into bad books by overly positive reviews and I honestly think this is why.

I don’t want to get specific in case someone feels called out. It’s something we all do and it’s fine, it’s just frustrating sometimes. I’ve been thinking I need to go back to my rule about not reading new books. Gotta wait until the hype dies down and the reviews pile up so the averages make more sense. I think newness might also be a factor sometimes. Not always. Sometimes it’s just the way people write always. But that might fix some of it.
I can relate. For me such book was Normal People. So much of hype.
Absolutely... this happens a lot. I am especially vulnerable when I am half way excited by a book - by the premise, the author or even the cover.
