Eddie has insulted and abused Celeste quite a bit. He sees a Nigerian who seems to be smuggling people into Europe. Eddie spends a lot of time watching him, day after day. One day he approaches the man and they talk. That night he apologizes to Celeste and says it won't happen anymore, he accepts the apology. In the morning he is gone, no where to be seen.

Eddie travels through a myriad of African countries in dangerous situations and travel by boat to Paris. There a group of African illegal immigrants who stay together for support and comfort. One by one the immigrants disappear in police raids but Eddie is able to hang on.

Eddie becomes a renown signwriter in his district in Accra. Celeste looks him up and they begin an adult relationship but he realizes that their relationship was in the past.

Eddie was separated from the Celeste and from school. His uncle finds him a position as an apprentice to a sign writer and he becomes a part of the man's family. The trauma of losing Celeste and Nana's death has caused him to be mute.

A young man living at a boarding school in Ghana sneaks out of school with a fellow female student for a day on the beach in Accra. The headmistress dies in a mysterious accident, the teacher is injured and the children are blamed. The girl is sent to a religious school, the boy home to his parents.
