I would have an easier time suspending disbelief if this were a fantasy story. But alas, it is not.

Something I've noticed about myself when I read is that I have a harder time with tall tales that aren't explicitly magical. My mind is like "okay, there's no magic--ergo, this is the Real World, so I expect X, Y, and Z rules to apply," and then when they don't it confuzzles me a little. ;)
So I definitely CAN enjoy a tall tale type story, and I think I'll enjoy this one, but there's always that bit of "huh, okay, weird" in the back of my mind.
