Circadian rhythm works in a circle of awake period and sleep period but there is this thing called adenosine which piles up in the brain and forces sleep. When we pull an all nighter, this adenosine levels will keep rise inducing more sleep but the circadian rhythms will enter into awake period and thus we feel alert. Similar in the case of jetlag, which is compounded by external factors as well.

Children have backward circadian rhythm so they fall asleep before their parents, and teenagers have forward so they sleep after their parents, which gives them few hour of individuality before they become adult. + . For adults who find it hard to sleep early at night, don't take a nap, don't sleep at the noon, exercise and take indirect sunlight at the noon.

We dream for a brief period but it seems as if we had a dream for a very long duration, this is explained by firing in our memory neurons which are replaying our memory at a slower rate, around 1/2 to 1/4 times the normal speed, thus we feel like we dreamt for half an hour in a 10 minute sleep. Also, while sleeping, our brain shifts our short term memory into our long term memory.
