This part of the book, or just this book, is a mystery.

Varys talks a lot in this chapter. This part has a lot of exposition. Yeah the show shortens a lot of dialogue. Also we learn what Robert thinks of Joffrey and how evil the little kid is. That gives us insight on why Robert stays on the throne.

"It's the Hand's tourney that's the cause of all trouble, my lords."
"The king's tourney,", Ned corrected.
(Paraphrased). This is actually very in character for Ned since he must believe that Robert is really the one in control of the kingdom. It's his honor talking. You know Eddard, he's a man of honor.

Reading the iPad version. So my updates might be different than usual. Now we see Samwell Tarly for the first time. He's crying a lot in this chapter. We are told his father is abusive towards Sam. He's kind of like Samwise from Lord of the Rings, only less competent and more fat and in an adult setting.
