I know I'm barely into this dense-ass book, but it is so good. Julian Bond was ahead of his time, or maybe we've just backtracked that horrible. Either way, his words were prophetic in the worst way. And they shouldn't have been. The gains have been so limited since he spoke and wrote these words upwards of 55 years ago.

There's like a million words per page, so progress feels soooo slow. But still, Bond's words still resonate. Truly a radical, truly brilliant and eloquent.

Some of these speeches could be given today without changing a god damned word.

Howard Zinn was one of Bond's professors? John Lewis was chair of the SNCC while Bond was communications director there? MLK wrote in support of Bond to the Georgia state government?

What a confluence of great minds.

Bond has a way with words that others likely envy. The way he clearly and authoritatively likened segregation in spite of Supreme Court rulings to a jaunt toward totalitarianism is still relevant.

This book is introduced by its editor as Julian Bond in his own words and not a biography. It may not be a biography in any typical sense, but it is certainly a political autobiography that Bond never sat down to write but was instead pieced together by editor Michael G. Long. Given the background information Long provides before each piece and the way the pieces flow chronologically, it certainly feels biographical.
