This story really took off in the second half of the book and careened to a close. Mrs. Richardson was unlikeable from the beginning but became almost evil later - or maybe her snobbery and nasty probing for secrets was absolutely evil.
There are no easy answers here and surely no happy endings. Everyone loses.
