Definitely revisit this chapter. Very important takeaways on how freedom of movement and association are denied to quell rebellion. Also how quickly infrastructure is built in these instances to help the war effort even as they were denied to the population to improve QOL

“The technique of power consists in relying on the favorable minority in order to rally the neutral majority and neutralize the hostile minority”. Really just a fancy way of saying divide and conquer but an interesting passage about counterinsurgency nonetheless.

Insane amount of connections already between colonial propaganda about peasant uprisings and right wing US propaganda about civil rights movements/riots. Key quote: “there was an overemphasis on what was seen as the dark side of the movement; the oaths and their administration...refusing to acknowledge that they were dealing with a genuine expression of frustrated nationalism.”
