This has been a rough one so far, as anyone familiar with the book/author would expect. The couple samples I read before getting the book (check Expat Press' website for samples/interview) were descriptions of very disturbing sex acts, so I can't say the book is surprising. But man...this thing really doesn't let its foot off the gas. If there isn't a sex act or sexual fantasy going on, there wil be in a page or 2.

(2/) In addition there's plenty of mental illness/hallucinations, verbal abuse, and drug use. It's all written very well, but don't know if i have the fortitude for another 750 pages. I hate to admit it, but as a music nerd, I might be most bothered by the casual inclusion of a Brainbombs show, since outside of 4 shows, they do not play live. The description of the show also seems totally off to me (as does Daughters being the opener and the narrator referring to the show as "the Brainbombs concert".) I try to overlook this as a small mistake by the author, but considering that the narrator is schizophrenic, I wonder if the author was well-aware about the implausibility of the show described and it will come back as a plot point. I'm probably overthinking this, but there's a lot of obscure music mentioned in the book and the references usually fit very well (enjoyed the main character being excited that he found a rare EP from the Mayorrs which really makes sense for the time period.) I guess I gotta finish to see if the Brainbombs come up again!

Also gotta give the publisher a lot of credit on this book - it's a nice looking 850 page book, and they are selling it for 12 bucks postage paid. Seems like they would barely break even with that price, but has to help getting this book into people's hands.
