This is a fascinating study of the most famous early American “sermon” — though in the first 20 pages Rodgers argues persuasively that it would not have been recognized as a sermon, and was probably never delivered to the entire Massachusetts community. Part 1 puts Winthrop’s famous tract on Christian Charity in its context. Parts 2 and 3 will trace its latter life in American myth making.
