If something’s wrong, you should fight to fix it. Even if it’s a fight you can’t win. Better to die than fight for the wrong side.

Parker realized that the guard wasn’t much different than himself. Probably some guy living on the edge of the market. His mother probably talked him into casting his lot in with the guards.

But wherever he came from, the guard was standing in the way between him and freedom. 

That made him an enemy.

When the rich and the poor are united, and not kept separate from one another, then we will have true peace.

While some people lost their compassion in their ideals, this old man ideals only fueled his compassion. It just wasn’t in him to let someone die when he could save them.

No matter how much the country's propaganda spat out kind words about the men in power, he would not be fooled by their manipulation. If the Governor and the Chancellor made something happen in Arcadia, it was always for the sake of only themselves, only to keep themselves in their seats of power. And, most importantly, to protect themselves from any who might want to challenge them.

His mind raced. He knew it was risky; that this could be the act that got him taken to the cells. But he didn’t care. Something had to be done—and if no one else would do it, he would be the one—whatever the cost. In a haze, he stepped through the crowd. A man stepped into the path the others had cleared and spat in his face, screaming, “Unlawful.” But Parker pushed through, without a glance behind him

The girl stood in the center of the circle of religious bullies, speechless. Logic, for only a moment, told the boy to keep walking. Minding his own business would keep him out of trouble, and this would ultimately serve the greater good. But conscience trumped instinct, and he cut toward the disciples and the young girl.
