Currently finding some annoying stereotypes about gender, but they seem to be coming from the Sadiri and maybe not the author.
Ironically, I fell into my own stereotype at the beginning of the book, thinking the main character was male because they had such a buddy-style relationship with the male Sadiri (no sexual tension, flirting, etc.), and having missed the gender cue that "Delarua" is maybe a female name.

That chapter seemed strangely rushed - it was the kind of episode that could have been many chapters in another book if it wasn't a side plot. Still, the effect was done very well, and sent a chill through my spine. Very disturbing!

Really readable so far, with funny moments and intriguing moments. Curious where this will be going.

Great, enticing prologue. I love the writing so far: she conveys information with minimal words, and writes with an eye for the beauty of each scene.

1. Joral saying that Delarua and Freyda were "engaged in some kind of female bonding ritual", when all they were doing was drinking, talking, and laughing together, which is basically the kind of socializing Freyda and Lanuri were doing ("singing") and Sadiri and Delarua had been doing ("mingling"), but if it's two women they have to alienate it in some way and act like they are above it.
2. Joral saying to Delarua, "if you wish to cry... (w)e understand that this is common behavior for many Terran females". Delarua deflects it by saying she is Cygnian and not going to cry, but it was annoying for her to have to even address it. It was also unclear if a Sadiri would have even made the female distinction, since they would most likely differentiate themselves from all Terrans, even Terran males since they actually do cry from time to time, unlike Sadiri men (apparently, from the story so far).
And I'm noticing this sexism is coming entirely from statements from Joral so maybe that is something about his character?
I am also now realizing how refreshing the first 35 pages were when Dllenahkh and Delarua were enjoying an amiable peer relationship with no hint of gender discussion even coming into it so it often felt they were talking as equals (or as equal as the Sadiri allowed themselves to talk with Terrans/Cygnians).
