oh wow! How did I not know this existed? I read Mosaic by Jeri Taylor when it came out in the 90's. I look forward to your recommendation for this one.

I think some details contradict Mosaic, which is considered canon. So it is odd. Hasn’t really grabbed me yet, so I am reading it slowly in between other books.
alas...I see it's part of a captains series. Perhaps I'll give it a try to share in your "meh" factor.
