Really enjoyed the 2nd expedition, thanks to Font's descriptive journal writing. Although he [Font] had a strong Eurocentric perspective, [some of] his description of various native tribes & their way of life, the conditions of people and animals who were joining the 2nd expedition, trees, birds, floras, landscape, rivers, etc..even his constant complaints about the Commander [Anza] -- were quite entertaining.

I've enjoyed the story so far though I'm only at the beginning of Anza's first expedition. The story is a bit dry at times, but it still captures the raw experience of those who were participated in the expedition so well. It also brilliantly captures the terrain and atmosphere of southern California and some part of northern Mexico in the old days (1774-1776).
