So many of these dishes are unnecessarily complicated and unappealing. Plus we're banana appears... you'd wonder why.

Because of the way it frames *how* we eat this is both a charming and (oddly) useful book, even though most people don't have to deal with the same cooking conditions, like no sink or fridge. The thought of days of unrefrigerated meat makes me glad I'm a vegetarian.

Re-reading this cookbook — practically an accompaniment to dreary post-war cinema — in honor of the author who died on Friday.
