Hit a snag in making some of this work. Obviously it's going to take more practice. Or, maybe I need to read more. Something will click. But so far, I'm finding this book helpful.

Haven't read much more. Spent so much time stuyding the methodology & trying to apply it, that I have enough to work with. Want to finish it, but this is NOT a book to plow thru. It's a book to study, revisit & incorporate. I can see a lot of friends benefit from this. I know, my family & I have.

Chpt on Boundaries was very helpful without preaching. Yes, I know we need to set boundaries... BUT HOW?
This focuses on 2 key guidelines after reiterating HOW we communicate is as important as WHAT we're communicating.

Format is clever:
Each chapter introduces a case study or two w/the problems encountered.
McConville then dissects the case looking at all angles.
He suggestions options for resolution
And finally summarizes the key points before
Bullet pointing Parent Key Points to focus on.
Fabulus structure!

Wanted to pause & digest before I hit Chpt 9. This is a great book. We've been doing counseling as our own kiddos have struggled to transition. So much of this book was said in our own counseling; but having it pointed out in different words in black & white to refer to when things backslide has been enormously helpful. We're finally making good changes. It's hard to see the edge when you're eyeball deep in the Muck.

PS: I have taken so many notes. My digital copy already has 63 notes/320 Highlights. Usually I am frugal with notes. But man, this is proving VERY helpful. It isn't intended to replace therapy; but, it is an excellent supplement. Sometimes we need to hear the same things from a different voice/perspective. This is not a book to read in one sitting: This is a guide to keep by you on the days when communication fails.

2/2 Cont.
18 yo twins who just gradated HS this year amid Covid. Things couldn't get any crazier. Famiily therapy to learn to live together again was stalled out. I am a firm believer in gathering any/all info before making a decision & I often (not always) turn to books. This was such a TIMELY capture. McConville doesn't preach. His has decades of experience. You can tell, by how he defines terms in lay terms.

Wow! This is actually a really great find for me. Aspects read like a seminar textbook.
Chapters have been broken down into digestible nuggets.
Author summarizes/highlights key things to know at the end conveniently titled: "Parents". But, as I found out; this is not a Cliff's Notes/Shortcut. It will make No Sense if you skim the chapt. READ it.
I paused to implement some of what I have learned ~ & it works!!
