I find it curious that so few Goodreads reviewers mention the style in which this book is written. I love it, myself. But I don't find it easy reading at all. It's poetic, sly -- bemused, almost -- devilishly clever. It hints at or insinuates a lot more than it says outright. It takes a lot of concentration to follow it -- or it does for me, anyway. It's unlike any historical novel I've ever read.

The Cardinal is certainly in a tight spot.

This is a very subtle book that requires all your attention. There is wit on every page.

Clearly we're in the hands of a master. This is great. So incredibly jam-packed, so incisive — not a single wasted word. 33 pages in and I'm hooked.
