Chapter 3 was HILARIOUS (a surprise considering this is a serious sci-fi work), even though the chapter ends on a tragic note. The story picks up nicely from there.

The preface was a real slog and was set to make the book yet another one of those "wall of words" works that literary pundits praise. Fortunately, the first chapter is more straightforward and enjoyable.
