He saw the yellow car begin to move slowly through the milling crowd, gaining
speed as it won through the densest part, with the grey uniform at the wheel and the girl
beside him in the front seat. And he saw, he would have sworn he saw, that as the yellow car
reached the open street and whirled away into the night, the driver raised one hand in a gay
debonair wave. He knew they
would get away.

and then he caught her in his arms and spun her round before she could speak.
"Run for it!" he rapped. "This is why angels have wings!"

Without a moment's hesitation, he stepped out into space and spreadeagled himself
silently on the roof.
He was aware that he was doing the maddest of mad things. If it chose to do so, it could easily travel two
hundred miles before it made its first stop; and every one of those miles would have its chance
of hurling him off to certain injury and possible death-apart from the ever present risk of
discovery.
