There's nothing that terrifies me more than hearing the much dreaded words "I am a Modern Woman" from a historical romance heroine.

So she wants to help him find the stolen jewels but won't give him the note that has a coded message with clues that will help him find said stolen jewels?.......

"Petunia, Daisy," he muttered. "Are all your pets named for flowers?"
"Not all of them. The mastiff's name is B.C."
"Based on the size of the beast, short for Bone Crusher, no doubt?"
"No. Boot Chewer. Consider yourself forewarned."

The hero is a Doctor who has a menagerie of animals who have names. Ovaries triggered.

This is one of those "he kissed me and ditched me years ago and I'm gonna make him pay for it" stories.

Alvina Why does this happen though? Do authors genuinely like the women theyre writing?

I'm sure they do and think this a nice way of approaching it. It's a forced clunky way to make their heroines modern and "revolutionary" by literally having them say it or do outlandish stuff. But I prefer a much more subtle, understated approach or just don't do it at all. It's a historical. lol Because no way in hell you can ever convince me your heroine would use the term "modern" to describe herself.

Daisyness I hate this too!!! For me, an author who writes feminist women in period novels but without being over the top is Evie Dunmore. Her protagonists are ahead of their time, but they feel ashamed to talk about underwear, for example. They also get shocked by indecent conversations, and even when one of them urgently needs to ride a horse without a sidesaddle in public, she's externally ashamed of having to do it because, after all, any woman at that time would feel this way. The author never uses the badass-victorian-woman-that-doesn't care-about-her-own-reputation card.
Every time an author tries to modernize a protagonist in a period book, a fairy dies.
