The fact that Malcom died a year after Louise was released is just such a travesty that I don’t know if I quite have the words to address it. This book is so well done, I was surprised I’m already so close to the end.

Louise’s troubles are unbelievably unbearable. To have read about her as a young girl to this chapter is a horrific gap.

I am not a mother and still on the fence about whether I will be one, but it’s interesting how each woman has something in common with me or my ideals. Amazing women

I really appreciate how Tubbs acknowledged both agency and the effects of oppression and access to resources when discussing how Alberta’s marriage was more peaceful than Louise or Berdis’.

I am really enjoying how this is written. Each chapter I have 3 different stories to look forward to. Louise being into Garveyism makes perfect sense to Malcolm X and Alberta being in the church and NAACP makes perfect sense for MLK. And Berdis being into writing makes perfect sense for James Baldwin. Off their teenage years alone their children’s lives were framed. That is WILD. And awesome
