The author attributes the connection of money with American Protestantism to Gnosticism and its beginning to feel like a catch-all explanation. I'm 136 pages into the book. There is one short, generalized paragraph in the foreword that kind of provides a sense of his meaning when he refers to gnosticism.

The author writes the servant-leadership management model was grounded in the spiritual outlook of the sixties counter-culture. Wal-Mart has become the most enthusiastic exemplar of the model which the author suggests was appropriated from the rural/farm women who made up the majority of Wal-Mart workers.
