This was a fine, if a unremarkable, history of Savannah until I got to the bit on the Civil War. Sigh. This book was written in the early 1990s, but surely EVEN THEN much of this stuff was racist. They blame the founding of the KKK on the North’s corruption and ex-slaves being “impudent.” Not kidding. “In desperation, white southerners turned to extralegal means to rectify the situation.” Jesus.
