“Paris of the West”. This is a fascinating history of SF but also of California; the two are intertwined. So far I’ve read about the Ohlone tribe, the missions, the gold & silver rush, creation of Golden Gate park, and the origin to many Bay Area cities’ names. Modesto was named after a man for his modesty. Leland Stanford made his $ in railroads; the capital of the “California Republic” was Sonoma.
