I'm always fascinated by retellings of Phantom of the Opera. This contemporary one, however, is pretty icky. Our Christine stand-in is underage and there is a lot of sex. Yikes.

The Stars May Rise and Fall by Estella Mirai (2000s Japan rock scene, also a gay retelling, which is rare in Phantom world!)
Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine (AU China slaughterhouse YA take.)
The Phantom's Apprentice by Heather Webb (full-on villain Phantom, super-savvy Christine who wants to be a magician, and maybe the most likeable Raoul I've encountered in any retelling.)
