While I know that this book was written in the context of Apartheid and the AIDS crisis in South Africa, it has thus far provided me with a guiding lens with which to reconcile COVID-19 and racial injustice in the United States with the religion of my upbringing. Ackerman’s honesty about the church’s complicity in suffering has been refreshing, grounding, and thought-provoking.
