Williams ardently defends Augustine's conception of evil as a very rich account, with both an eye for tragedy and an eye for possible societal and individual improvement. Certainly, Augustine's idiosyncratic work allows such a defence. However, Williams may have turned a blind eye to its constraints and biases. In particular, there is a certain moral absolutism and anti-eroticism (prudery) that doesn't sit well.
