Gah! Am I supposed to have some SYMPATHY for this kid? Ugh.

the sympathy doesn't kick in until later. For the first 100 pages or so you almost look forward to his untimely demise at the hands of a hungry bear.

I don't know I saw the movie and I didn't really feel any compassion for him. I hope the book is different.
Watched the movie and loved it based on nothing more than its romantic appeal. If one can't relate to what motivates someone to do what he did then I would say society definitely has you by the balls. I would not actually undertake such a journey myself but would find less drastic ways to feel free in our unfree world. Kudos to anyone that spends an extended period of time to find themselves without the influence of money, ego and society standards. Awesome!
No, I get that part of it. But he was COMPLETELY unprepared. He didn't know the terrain. He didn't know how to save the meat he killed. I would have been more impressed if he'd spent a year in Alaska asking the natives how they did it, and THEN embarked on his quest.Plus, he was a dick to his family. That pissed me off.
All true enough however its been my observation that that is how most of us do life anyways. He thought he was prepared but underestimated. There was a real Tolstoy feel to this story in that the real lessons in life usually come just before we die. Whether witnessing this or watching a movie we can learn something before its to late. He learned it in a very profound way. Let u and I not. :)
