Catholicism:
Being a baptized Catholic I can’t say how much of Dante’s writings are included. I don’t think it should be an all or nothing, but a Priest could better address. Dante has lust as the first, not so bad, layer of hell, and betrayal as the 9th and worst layer. What is betrayal? If your friend Craig, from CA, in the 8th grade, ends up with your girlfriend, from DC, in the 5th grade, is that betrayal?

Influence:

Dante’s Inferno inspired famous writers: Marx, Milton, Longfellow, Elliott, Milton, Chaucer, Boccaccio, and Dan Brown. Dante’s Inferno is mentioned 150 times in Dan Brown’s book.

Famous people Dante took upon himself to condemn, in 9 layers of Hell: Caiaphas, Julius Caesar, Medusa, Alexander the Great, Pope Nicholas 3, Pontius Pilate, Emperor Frederick, Atilla the Hun, and Filipo Argenti.

Losing relevance?:
It’s clear Dante wanted this work to be heavily influenced by the “goings on” of his time. With the exception of the first layer, all people Dante encounters are from his time. I’m not sure, if the 9 layers were analyzed by today’s standards, the layers might be in a different order. Heresy might not fall at six, but level 2. Homosexuality wouldn’t be grouped with violence in level 8

Analysis:
The author of this book makes it clear Dante was an admirer of Virgil, the ancient Roman epic poem who lived during the time of Jesus. Dante makes himself the journeyman with Virgil as his guide. If Dante were focused on conformity to Catholicism, wouldn’t he have made his guide one of the angels from the Bible? Heaven is associated with the love of a woman. After Hell, he is greeted by his love,Beatrice

Florence:
I have no reason to think there would be any connection between Dante and my grandmother, named Florence. The inscription on Dante’s tomb reads:Florence:mother of little love. I wanted to see Verona some day because of Romeo and Juliet(9th grade) and noticed it has a statue of Dante. After refreshing myself about Dante, I noticed something. Dante was convinced his DNA could be traced to Ancient Rome?
