This is a tough read. The best words to describe it: intense, emotional and difficult.

DH Lawrence grew up in a district with many collieries, and he seems to have hated them. Even though they were the economic support for the region. I grew up in a factory town, where one company employed the entire area, and I ended up working there for much of my life. The same disrespect for humans that Lawrence hated about collieries? Equally present in the factory of my experience. Not a good thing.

Of all the books I've ever read, this is the most difficult to understand.

Slugging through, one paragraph at a time. Taking breaks by studying advanced calculus, which is less difficult.

Reading DH Lawrence, I'm finding I really have to focus. It takes as much concentration as studying a math book. Definitely worth the effort, although it is slow going.

Reading DH Lawrence is intense ... it is almost like a book on math. With his books, I think it is best to take it very slow.

"... looking out from the shelter into the flashing stars ... There were the stars in the dark heaven travelling , the whole host passing by on some eternal voyage."

An extremely well written and absorbing novel. I have just finished Sons and Lovers, which took forever to get through, and DHL's writing style improved considerably when he wrote The Rainbow.
I had to change editions, though. The first one was a paperback I bought from Amazon (published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform) and it had such a small font (maybe 6 or 7?) that it was almost unreadable.
