I wanted to write about spectacle creep and unnecessary experiments, but God oh God has Bardugo delivered a brilliant ending. Although I still wasn't very fond of the parts about ancient magic and whatnot (they reminded me of Pratchett, and not in a good way), the first half was impeccable and the conclusion more than compensated for the (subjectively!) weaker chapters.

Bardugo is revisiting an old series of hers, asking the question What happens after the Big Bad is finally vanquished? - and it seems she's found an intriguing answer, which is then served to us with all the wit and way with words she's gained since her debut novels. Extending the YA March / Bardugo Březen is a decision I don't regret making.

I didn't realise just how much I missed Nina... Also, the 3rd person and changing viewpoints are so much more pleasant to read
