The book got off a good start, but soon devolved into too many small story lines, interspersed with random riddle-like chapters and explanatory/philosophical chapters. The characters, especially main character Mary, are exceedingly dull, and the story drags on without seeming to know where it wants to go. If I weren't reading this for a reading group, I would stop now.
